Message TT.net's been slow lately, and after a long period in school actually working on assignments *pfft*, I finally got to work on my Throttle body this week:

At the start of this semester, I spent a bit of time, modeled up a real basic TB example, programmed a HAAS milling machine and made my first TB prototype out of renboard:

And as it turns out I got the profile of the plenum, the screw locations, and the stock bearings damn near press fit into the TB spot-on.

But then, that put me behind in class again, so I had to take a month off and actually do work, but finally picked it back up this week.

From there I expanded upon the original design file (same basic shape, same position of screw holes, same 60mm throat ;) and came up with this:

This new design is the same length as the original TB, is beefed up a little bit in the clamping area, has a slight taper in opening similar to the stock TB, and has a little more provisions on the side for the mounting the the springs.

Though it is still currently just a "concept" I do have the program written for the mill, all my tools in holders (ready to put into the mill) and my stock (renboard again) ready to bolt onto the table. So on Monday morning when I return, I should be able to have the 2nd revision of my throttle body built.

However, the actual built unit will not be so pretty as the solidworks design. I attend a tiny State College and my program has a tiny state budget. Im building this on the smallest HAAS mill available, and have to make due with huge compromises in tooling:
ie, to actually make the undercuts (only have acces to 3 axis) I have to make due with a 1.25" diameter woodruff key cutter that is so short I only have .020" clearance from the top of my part to tool holder. But still....quite the fun challenge, and if everything goes well next week, I may actually order my own special tooling to get this thing built right!
